The Marais Poitevin straddles three départements: Vendée, Charente-Maritime and Deux-Sèvres. It extends over a vast area of almost 100,000 hectares, from the Baie de l’Aiguillon (a relic of a marine gulf) to its heartland, the Venise Verte. The wet part of the marsh is criss-crossed by a multitude of canals of varying sizes, which add to its charm and make it easy to explore by traditional “plate” boat. It’s a paradise for wildlife, especially for the birds that live here permanently or stop off during their migrations. There are also many species of aquatic animals such as otters, coypu and eels.
